International Honor for Bev Newsome

Beverly Newsome Named 2018 Little League® Challenger Award Recipient

Beverly, and her husband Gary Newsome, started the Challenger Division in the state of Washington nearly 30 years ago.

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (July 16, 2018) – Beverly Newsome has been involved in Little League® for 47 years and has held just about every position at the local league level, from working the concession stand while both her son and daughter were playing to even serving as League President.

In 1990, Mrs. Newsome saw the opportunity to implement the Little League Challenger Division® in the state of Washington, starting with just two teams in District 8. Since then, Mrs. Newsome has been actively contributing to the success of those programs and her district has since grown to six teams. After holding numerous volunteer positions within the Little League program, Mrs. Newsome now serves as an Assistant District Administrator (A.D.A.) for the Little League Challenger Division in District 8

Because of her commitment to Little League and the Little League Challenger Division over the last 28 years, Little League International is proud to name Mrs. Newsome as the 2018 Little League Challenger Award recipient.

“This is the dream of a lifetime,” said Mrs. Newsome. “It’s wonderful to even be thought of for this award. I hope this will encourage others in the community to join the fun and experience the benefits of the Little League Challenger Division.”

With four generations of Little Leaguers in her family, including her great-grandchildren who continue to play today, Mrs. Newsome is well-aware of the efforts that go in to any Little League season and the importance of volunteerism.

“I volunteer for the kids,” said Mrs. Newsome. “Seeing the smiles and excitement on the players faces and knowing that they are so happy to be able to participate in their sport and have a meaningful experience in the Little League program is what it’s all about.”

In addition to her work with local leagues, Mrs. Newsome also works directly with the Seattle Mariners to provide additional support of the Little League Challenger Division throughout her District thanks to Little League Days at the ballpark, Challenger Jamborees, and the honor of being invited to play in Safeco Field with the Mariner players on July 8th.

The Little League Challenger Award was established in 1998 as a way to recognize the loyal support of the many volunteers in this important program. The Challenger Division allows children with physical and intellectual challenges the ability to experience fun and fellowship of baseball and softball, regardless of limitations. Mrs. Newsome will be presented with the Little League Challenger Award during the 2018 Little League Baseball® World Series in South Williamsport, Pa., this August.
